Togher AC County Cross Country Champions!

County Intermediate and Juvenile B Cross-Country Championships (16th Oct 2016)

The County Intermediate and Juvenile B Cross-Country Championships took place in Carraig na bhFear on Sunday 16th October. Togher AC ladies; Louise Murphy, Eimear O’Brien, Marianne Haslette and Yvonne Walsh fielded a team in this 5k race – and boy what a team they made!

Conditions were very wet in Carraig na bhFear, Cork county having had torrential rain the previous two days and nights. Thankfully it was dry on the day itself. Not entirely new to cross country running, Louise, Eimear and Marianne dusted off their spikes that they had hung up many years ago. Little did they know upon joining Togher AC Fit4Life, they would end up back where they started out. It was Yvonne’s debut cross country run and so the others, as well as coaches Frank Doherty and Aidan Hartnett, imparted welcome advice. Given how the race went though, Yvonne may have discovered a well hidden but definite talent for cross country running!

From the outset, the Togher AC ladies ran as a team. Maintaining their 7th and 8th positions throughout, Louise and Eimear had very steady races. They were closely followed by Marianne, who gradually drew away from the rest of the field and with determination and held her place from 3k. Yvonne showed true grit, battling it out with Galtee, Midleton, Youghal and Mallow  AC runners and from the half way mark steadily picked off her competitors one by one. In what can only be described as an inspirational finish, from 400m out, Yvonne picked up the pace leaving competitors in her wake.
