Local Action in August

Local Action in August

August is generally a quiet month in athletics, but not so for some members in Togher AC.

Doc Doherty’s circuit training each Friday night in the clubhouse saw an increase in numbers after the typically quieter summers months. This is perhaps a preview of what’s to come at circuits, with the session in huge popularity last autumn and winter.

Boot Camp 1

Doc’s dedication to the club and our fitness, saw him organise a boot camp at Warren Strand in west Cork on Sunday 14th August. It was a stunning day at the beach, however we were not there to lounge about – and if we wanted to, that certainly was not Doc’s idea… The day saw team work, sweat, pain and tears (well not quite but close!).

Boot Camp 4

Thelma and Louise, two of Doc’s 50kg dummies, were stretchered by each team from one end of the beach to the other – several times. There were punishments for losing teams in the sea (cool and very refreshing as it happened 🙂 ). The day was superbly organised by Doc and as a club we are very grateful to have such a skilled coach and leader as part of it.

On Saturday 14th August, Helen Walsh and Mary Beth Ryan ran in the East Cork Harbour Marathon. They ran in the half marathon event there, over what is a particularly challenging course. This is the first year of this 10km, half marathon and marathon organised by Aghada GAA club, supported by Aghada Running Club. It was a very well run event and perhaps one to look out for in future years. See http://eastcorkmarathon.com/.

The hills did not phase Helen or Mary Beth, who have recently returned from a running holiday in the Dolomites in Italy. Helen was 5th woman over the line (1:44:56) and 3rd in her age category (O40). Mary Beth was 11th woman to finish and 4th in her age category (O35). Superb running by both of our Aprés Runners. We are incredibly proud of you.
