Athlete Interview – Oonagh Goggin

Regulars of the Ballincollig Park Run and the Fit4Life Tuesday runs will recognise this month’s profiled member, Oonagh Goggin. Since completing the 0-5km training in December Oonagh has been building up her PBs on a Saturday morning in Ballincollig and her running is going from strength to strength. Even the family dog Buddy is reaping the rewards as he joins her for the occasional Saturday morning park run.  Her performances are particularly impressive when you consider she was starting from scratch with running, with walking her main activity since secondary school.

Oonagh’s son Colm joined the Togher juveniles last year and was loving it.  The club offered him great coaching and support so when Oonagh saw the Fit4Life 0-5km offered she decided to give it a go and hasn’t regretted it for a minute. She found the group really encouraging and Claire’s leadership and other coaches made sure no-one was left behind. After completing the Togher 5km on December 30th Oonagh continued her training by joining the Tuesday Fit4Life group and circuit training on Fridays.

‘Now that I’ve developed the habit of getting out for a run 2-3 times a week (nearly every week!) I’m really reaping the rewards in terms of better fitness and feeling great. I’m even getting past the ‘survival’ stage and enjoying the runs. I love that the group runs and circuit training is so sociable, and everyone encourages everyone else no matter what level they’re at.’

Oonagh’s running goal for 2019 was to complete a 10km run which she achieved over Easter, even though she felt it was well outside her comfort zone. While she didn’t make it easier for herself by choosing a route in Kerry with lots of hills, Oonagh made it over the finish line in 65 minutes and has already set herself a target to beat that time in her next  race. Oonagh is certainly one of the most determined ‘graduates’ of the 0-5km group and is a wonderful example of how some group support, a healthy dose of determination and getting into a steady training habit can reap rewards.
