A record number of 740 runners turned out for the Togher AC 5km road race yesterday in partnership with Cork Mental Health Foundation. What a day it was for the club with a small army of enthusiastic volunteers making sandwiches for the troops, registering the race runners, marshals, pacers and stewards (not to mention the most important role of toilet roll re-fillers!) The excitement was building in the Community Centre from early morning and from 10.30 the most eager of runners collected their race numbers and goodie bags before heading off for their pre-race warm up.
Outside Supervalu (our main sponsor for the event), groups of runners from clubs across the city and county caught up on the Christmas news, complained about their Christmas gluttony and were grateful for the excuse to run off a few of the calories consumed on a fine, mild December afternoon. The weather was kinder to us this year, with a light drizzle easing off just in time for the start of the race. After a fast start, the leaders of the pack broke away early on in pursuit of a PB, helped along by the encouragement of stewards every few hundred metres, as well as the community of Togher who watched from their bedroom windows and front gardens, clapping and cheering the steady stream of sprints, runners and walkers, all challenging themselves to the edge of their limits.
For many it was a family affair, with some of our members bringing their teenage kids along – for our Little Athletics and Juvenile members, it was a chance to reap the benefits of months of track training, and our seniors and Fit4Members were out in force, alongside our newest group of 0-5k members who were experiencing their first ever 5k roadrace. No matter what the speed or the motivation for running, there was a great atmosphere along the route – this continued on to the Togher Boys’ School where the trays of fresh sandwiches and traybakes were devoured with cups of tea and coffee along with post race banter and analysis.
Rob Heffernan was on hand to give out the prizes to the 2019 race winners, with Paul Moloney from Mallow AC the first to cross the line and Michelle Finn from Leevale AC the first female. Togher AC’s Gavin Sweeney came in third place overall. Click here for the race results and photos of the day with thanks to our friends at the Running in Cork blog.

Also a big thanks to everyone who supported us by running in the race. For many of us, running is a way to alleviate stress and the winter blues. Running is a proven remedy for stress and anxiety so it is very appropriate that the proceeds from the road-race go to both the Togher AC and Cork Mental Health Foundation.
