Cork City Marathon 2017

If there was one occasion in the calendar year that gathers all senior club members together in numbers, it would be the annual Cork City Marathon. This year was no exception with 11 marathon, 19 half marathon and 20 relay team members registered to run for Togher AC on Sunday 4th June.

Full Marathon Runners & First Leg Relay Teams

Those who ran the full marathon were Steven Macklin, Seamus Sweeney, Barry Sheehan, Darren Hough, Patrick O’Connell, Rory McCarthy, Frank Linehan, Andrew Barrett, Yvonne Gough, Aisling Parkes & Amelie O’Brien. Pictured above are also the first leg relay team members Andrew Maher, Marianne Hasslette, Dan McCarthy & Colman McCarthy.

It was a great sight to see so many Togher AC singlets running, not least because the ladies were sporting their new singlets, which certainly past the test on the day. There were still many more members involved in the marathon relay teams running for their work places and for charities, credit to them also for their efforts in the race.

Half Marathon Runners

The Half Marathon runners for Togher AC were David Barrett, Cal McCarthy, Marjorie Lynch, Shirley Twomey, Yvonne Walsh, Mary Beth Ryan, Mary Clancy, Padraig O’Herlihy, Helen Walsh (pacer extraordinare), Bernard Coleman, Mary O’Halloran, Fergus O’Halloran, Fiona McTaggart, Mary Noonan, John O’Callaghan, Margaret Murphy, Gillian Murphy, Michael Dwane and Mairin O’Keeffe.

Everyone ran so well with incredible times by some, personal bests by others and with still more having ran their longest distance working up from zero not so long ago. We had three Fit4Life relay teams (supported by Cork Sports Partnership) and one competitive male team.

Fit4Life Relay Teams Leg 2. Miriam O’Donoghue, Valerie Hennessy & Noreen Murphy.

Our men did us proud by achieving a super 4th place in the relay team competition. Phenomenal running by the youngest team member, Andrew Maher, who ran the first leg,  and also from Brian O’Callaghan, Eric Browne, Dave O’Keeffe (who flew in from Scotland for the weekend) and Ian Tivy. A fantastic result and well deserved.

Three of the five man Relay Team who came 4th; Dave O’Keeffe, Eric Browne & Brian O’Callaghan. Missing are Andrew Maher & Ian Tivy.

Support is always great for Cork City Marathon and it is very much appreciated by the runners. Club members not running were out in force cheering and giving a welcomed boost along the way.

Fit4Life Relay Teams Leg 3. Claire Dunne, Jim O’Neill (Guest) & Louise Murphy.

Thanks to everyone who went to such efforts to support and also to Aidan and Kristine Hartnett who took photographs along the route.

Fit4Life Relay Teams Leg 4. Kate Hourihan, Barry O’Connell & Neasa de Burca (Guest).

Fit4Life Relay Teams Leg 5. Norma Kelleher & Mairéad O’Sullivan (Missing Liz Doyle).

Congratulations to everyone involved from the club, running for Togher AC or not, as the case may be in the relay teams, and especially also to coaches Frank Doherty, Doc Doherty and Denise Murphy. It was a super day for Cork city and well done to those who organised the event. Thank you to the stewards along the route who were so helpful, some of whom were also club members. The support and camaraderie in the city was touching and even overwhelming at times. Enjoy the slideshow of photographs below.
