Michael Kelleher

This month’s interview and profile is with our Togher Tiger Michael Kelleher.

When/how/why did you take up running?
I took up running in 2017. I used to play alot of football when I was younger. I stopped playing for a few years and I knew had to get active again so I signed up for the Cork city marathon.

When and why did you join Togher AC?
I joined Togher AC in January 2020 because I wanted to get serious about running and improve my PB’s.

What is/are your preferred distance/s?
My preferred distances are half marathon and marathon.

What is/are your PB/s?
5k – 18mins 10sec

Half marathon – 1 hour 34mins

Marathon – 3 hours 23mins

What is your proudest running moment?
Finishing my first marathon in 2017. I didn’t have a clue how much running I had to do to train for it. I ran 3 days a week and I thought that was enough (I suppose it’s the same story with everyone else’s first marathon!). It was going OK until the 13th mile then it hit home how under prepared I was. I finished the race and the wave of emotion I felt when I saw Amy and my kids at the finish was something I’ll never forget.

Who is/are your coach/es?
Tony Kelleher (no relation!) and Aidan Hartnett.

What is your main running goal for the next 12 months?
Run a sub 3 hour marathon. And get more pbs in other distances!

What do you like most about Togher AC?
There is a fantastic atmosphere every time we meet up. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming to new members. Everyone is there to improve their running and help each other by giving advice or by pushing each other when we’re running.

What would you say to someone thinking of taking up running?
Don’t think about it! Put on your runners and take the first step, after that it gets easier!

Who is your favourite sporting hero?
Thierry Henry.

What is your favourite food?
Pizza.

What is your favourite drink?
Coca Cola.

What is your favourite film?
The Dark Knight.
